چکیده

by SHAUN MICHAEL ENDRES This thesis presents methods of simulating and emulating satellite networks, in which the nodes can be orbiting around or located on different planets scattered throughout the solar system. The simulation method works by translating a satellite scenario described in a common orbit propagator to a form that can be interpreted by a popular network simulator. This merger results in a powerful tool to analyze new ideas for protocols designed for deep space networks. The emulation method takes a scenario from the same common orbit propagator and uses a distributed architecture to test a protocol’s implementation. This tool shows whether the protocol’s implementation performs as well as the simulated model claimed. The simulation and emulation methods described in this thesis provide a quick and effective way to take a protocol from an initial idea to verifying the implementation.

MACHETE: Environment for Space Networking Evaluation

Space exploration missions require the design and implementation of space networking that differs from terrestrial networks. In a space networking architecture, communication protocols need to be designed, validated and evaluated carefully to support different mission requirements. As actual systems are expensive to build, it is essential to have a low cost method to validate and verify mission...

Device driver-enabled wireless network emulation

Testing and evaluating the performance of actual software for wireless networks is difficult. Real-world wireless testbeds are costly and cumbersome to maintain. Measurement studies are complicated by many uncontrollable environmental influences, particularly the wireless channel. Network simulations on the contrary allow the convenient analysis of wireless networks with a maximum level of cont...

Emulation, Model Identification and New-approach Characterization of a PV Panel (TECHNICAL NOTE)

This paper provides experimental and simulation tools to characterize a Photo-Voltaic (PV) panel. To achieve this objective, we start from a PV electrical model and we propose a circuit using Diode-based-equivalent PV (DBEPV) panel. This circuit is presented as a prototype of an equivalent PV panel. It is designed to emulate a real PV module in different climatic conditions (irradiance and temp...

A lightweight container-based virtual time system for software-defined network emulation

Container-based network emulation offers high fidelity and a scalable testing environment to bridge the gap between research ideas and real-world network applications. However, containers take their notions of time from the physical system clock, and thus the time-stamped events from different containers are multiplexed to reflect the scheduling serialization by the Linux operating system. Conj...

Wireless Ad-Hoc Network Emulation Using Microkernel-Based Virtual Linux Systems

To explore the behavior of new algorithms or applications for mobile wireless ad-hoc networks, dedicated simulation systems are widely used. Since such simulation systems can only approximate the situation existing in real networks, significant efforts have to be spent to adapt algorithms or applications running in a simulation environment to run in a real network environment. In this paper, we...
